Dunkin’ Donuts… hum… I am not even a fan of mass produced donuts. I like to make donuts, baked in the oven. I like to get them at real bakeries, where they make ones you could never get at a regular donut shop. The Blue Kangaroo Cafe, that I mentioned in my last blog had banana donuts with Nutella glaze, yum!
That said, I woke up this morning with a severe craving for Dunkin’ Donuts. I was thinking of a really disgustingly sweet one, the chocolate cream filled powdered donut and the old fashioned cake one.
There is something you should know about Rhode Island. It is the Dunkin’ Donuts capital of the world. There are three Dunkin’ Donuts shops on the main street we live off of. People go there all times of day! There is always a line, always, even at 10 o’clock at night! Even the stadium is called the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence! And PS. there are also donut shops called Sip’n Dip in my town too!
The first summer we moved here, I had iced coffee and donuts all the time and at any time of day. Snacks in the afternoon, treats at night, etc. I couldn’t pass one without stopping for a treat, like crack, I was surely addicted.
This morning, I was feeling dejected that I hadn’t lost any more weight since my original big drop. I know I have had a few glasses of wine here and there but seriously! Therefore, I woke up and was determined to stop and have a donut today! I stomped downstairs and did my morning weigh in and low and behold – I was down 1.5 lbs!
Okay, who knows if this will hold but the important thing about staying on a “Diet Reboot” is believing that it is worth it. You have to Believe or all is lost. I do believe it will work. My will was tested this morning and I am happy to report that I made a HUGE bowl of strawberries and blueberries on yogurt with some raw honey and a dash of granola. It took me a long, long time to eat it and I could barely finish it.
What have I learned, nothing I already didn’t know to be honest. Food and drinks can be addictive. Sugar is addictive and the memory of it can haunt you like giving up cigarettes. Withdraw from sugar feels like you are missing out on what everyone else is having. Like going to a bar and not getting a drink. Somehow, you think everyone else is having more fun than you are but most of the time, that is just in your head.
The same is said for sugar. 99% of the time, I feel like eating healthy is a gift I am giving myself and that if I stood outside of a Dunkin’ Donuts and sold my yogurt parfaits for the price of a donut, I would have run out of stock in no time.
People want to eat better, I want to eat better, but moving against the crowd is challenging. I hope this journal helps you feel less alone in your pursuit of a healthier you. It is helping me!
